Teaching phronesis to aspiring police officers: some preliminary philosophical, developmental and pedagogical reflections

Abstract According to Aristotle, the crucial meta-virtue of phronesis (practical wisdom) is cultivated through teaching and experience. But he remains mostly silent on details this developmental picture its educational ramifications. This article focuses ‘taught’ element development in context police ethics education. I begin by piecing together trajectory that Aristotle suggests towards full virtue, up including development. also briefly list ten potential weaknesses picture. then present a reconstructed Aristotelian model explain how education could be executed, with an illustration from ongoing intervention for UK police-science students. However, go dampen enthusiasm about component, explaining relatively small ‘zone proximal development’ can targeted scaffolded teaching. Finally, elicit some implications conclusion most will need ‘caught’ gradually unfolding personal professional experiences.
